Beer and Belgium are synonymous throughout the world. No other country has among its native beers such diversity, individuality, idiosyncrasy and colour. Corsendonk is the perfect example of a brewery that offers such top-class beverages to the world's beer connoisseurs. The Corsendonk brewery was originally part of a monastery founded in 1398 by the Augustinians on an estate inherited from Maria de Corsendonk, daughter of the Duke of Brabant. Bible study, contemplative studies and teaching Latin were the main subjects for the monks at the time. The monastery however was closed in the 18th century by Emperor Joseph in 1784 and five years later sold at auction following the French Revolution, which also swept through the Low Countries. The brewery tradition was kept alive however by Florentinus Keersmaekers and his family still has connections with the Corsendonk brewery today.
